Description
Colorized photo from 1883
Original title: Assemblage of the Statue of Liberty
Location: Paris, France
This is the Statue of Liberty, as seen, topless. She really is just skin and bones. Bet it would be hard to find a big copper burger in her size anyway. We are in France, and Bartholdi is assembling his liberty statue, building it piece by piece.
The scaffolding looks pretty rickety, but when it came time to install her in NY, the base was too narrow, and they couldn't even put up the scaffolding they had, as narrow as it was. Instead people had to drop down from ropes and install it. No one died.
Coloring it, I decided to go for a shiny copper and slightly aged in spots. I don't know how long it takes for copper to go from bright orange to dull brown. And I have seen pictures from like 1910 and liberty is now a dark brown, so I left it more of a coppery color here.
I had to look up why he had so much pipe, it turns out he made a number of fountains, and I guess they had to lay the pipe as well.
I think that little building on the left, is a dovecote, I can't think of any other reason for it to be there, unless they sent messages by pigeon. There is a net underneath, I assume they either laid some kind of egg or I guess they just ate them.
