Original title: Interior of a pulque joint
Location: Mexico
This bar only serves pulque, what is pulque?
Pulque, is a whitish colored fluid that is sort of thick and slimy at the same time. It's created by fermenting the sap of the Agave plant, but it spoils easily, 24 hours is its shelf life, so you can only drink it there, or make it at home.
This drink is very old, thousands of years old, they had it in the days of the Aztec. Back then it was only consumed by the rich and if you were a royal. Occasionally the living sacrifice was allowed to drink it to ease their pain.
The drink is considered to be an aphrodisiac, medicinal, and they have a load of claims. But its also rather filling and its actually nutritious.
The flavor is described as sour with yeasty notes. However its the texture that's off putting, and because of this texture, Americans are sort of dared into drinking it. It's slimy, like saliva or other particular bodily fluids. It sort of hangs while going down like snot.
They say it has a low alcohol content, and you don't get drunk. But there is some kind of effect because your legs won't work if you have too much. Some say its a high like you would get if you took a certain kind of mushroom.
You can find these bars throughout Mexico. Often sold as a fruity version called curado. The bars themselves are often colorful, because Mexican seem to really like color. This place has a more classical flare.
