Can you count all the safety violations?
People standing on the edge of the track, cars parked too close, spectators hanging on anything they can get themselves onto, no helmets, seat belts, windshields, roll cages, the list goes on. In those days everything was far more exciting.
Cars were stripped down to their basics, while they did move pretty fast 70mph, they really weren't designed for crashing like today's cars. Which is probably what the spectators are for, to protect the car when it crashes. It does make you wonder how many people were hurt over the years to create the rules we have today.
