Description
Colorized photo from 1909
Original Title: Riverside Inn
Location: River St & Main St, Saranac Lake, Adirondack NY
The original image was taller and more square, it mostly contained more dirt, which served no purpose, so it was cut out. I was able to find a few postcards of this place over the years. Some showed it as yellow, some had pink, some were green. So I made a balance of yellow with pink, and a few purple spots, to give it a big Victorian doll house look. Because it is a hotel, I wanted flashy colors.
I chose this because of the Americana feel, though I'm thinking that they are setting up for a parade as there are a lot of spectators, a band is practicing, and the horses all have some kind of auction banner on each of them. The location feels like a model train should be passing by in the background.
This building was built in 1860, razed in 1930, so it had a pretty good run. They named a park after it, which is still there today, Riverside Park. If you ever wondered where park names come from. In fact everything from this vantage doesn't exist now, just up the block there is a power plant that's not shown here, that mountainside is mostly trees and a few houses, not so much now.
The company that made the post card, added a flag (which I thought was a good idea). And removed the street light which I think is kind of neat looking, and was too much trouble to clone out, unless pointed out, you generally don't notice the light. And for those that nit pick, I did take the trouble to look up how many stars are supposed to be on the flag.
