Description
Colorized photo from around 1887
Original Title: Canal St from Clay Monument
Location: 611 Canal St, New Orleans, LA
This is Canal St before they installed electric trolleys. Like many streets of this era, it was bumpy, and covered in manure. This area was probably for the upper class, it would explain why there is no shortage of piano stores.
On the right, far back, that large domed building, that was called the Mercier Building. When it was built (which was some time this year), it was a grain store. It later became the Mason Blanche department store, by 1906, they removed that glorious building; replacing it with a larger plainer building.
