Description
Colorized photo from around 1887
Original Title: Canal St from Clay Monument
Location: 611 Canal St, New Orleans, LA
The photographer in me, wants to take a chainsaw to that telegraph pole in the center, but like today, they would probably frown, and I would have to figure out a way to remove that pole. But it is what it is, ironically this same view of this same location has a lamp post in this very spot.
This location presently is the 700 block of Canal St, during this era it was the 100 block (for those that live there and were curious). The debate is, when this image was taken. They gave a range of 1880-1897. It was mentioned that the electric street car didn't really get there until 1886, and that big pink building on the right, was finished building in 1887, later on there were signs attached, and I don't see any, so I'm guessing it was being finished up right now.
This location still has trolley's, they look like that, minus the horses. Only a few buildings survive today.
