Description
This watercolor painting by Anne Sands is based on a 1920s postcard. The view is of Joppa Flats in Newburyport, Ma. The boats are docked along the Merrimac river. When tides were low clammers dug up buckets of clams to sell. The clamming industry in New England started after cars became available In the late 19th Century. This made it easier to transport clams to local restaurants. Clam shacks proliferated along a stretch of the Merrimack River in Newburyport known as Joppa Flats, providing clams to the Boston area.
