The object of the game is to win. Obviously. If you have a good hand, or a bad one, you can't show it on your face. This is called a tell. Every person that doesn't do this for a living may have some quirk they do with their hands or face that may give it all away.
Poker is a game where people gamble away their spare change. All the while gaining friendship through smoking. If you don't smoke, free free to suck a match. There is certainly enough of them anyway.
