Description
N is for Nixie Tube
The Nixie tube was invented in the 1950's when vacuum tubes were popular. And while not really steampunk, the term steampunk can really include any old, obsolete technology, that looks cool by todays standards. Items that no one really paid attention too in the past, are now used today because they are retro and interesting.
A Nixie tube contains a series of numbers or letters, shaped from wire. When electricity is applied, the neon mixture inside the tube makes the character glow an orange color. They were built to last, work well in the dark, but were quickly replaced with better technology.
