Description
Colorized photo from 1906 Nov 12
Original Title: Accident at the M.C.R.R Depot
Location: Detroit, MI, Third street
The brief story, a freight train ran out of control a mile up. It flew through a train shed, then destroyed the stopping device at the end, then went directly into this train station for the closest pick up ever.
It took out 3 floors, killed a person and injured a number more. One guy was pinned in place with his face inches from a boiler. Steam was all around him, they found him some how and saved him, but they didn't mention his condition. This building doesn't exist any more, it burned down in 1913. The building that replaced it has been vacant since 1980.
The original image had the movement of snow falling, I had to add it again later on. The colors came from a postcard I found. Notice that how in every old image like this - people are always super close? That awning could collapse at any time, and they would all be in under it. Also note they had to take it all away by hand.
