Colorized photo from 1909
Original title: Central Station
Location: 42 Depot Street Saranac Lake, Adirondacks, NY
The original image had more sky, so I removed that. When doing research for this train, it mostly comes back as a black train, but I did see two variants, one in red (for Christmas), another in blue, which was a toy. I wanted red because black is boring and it would have blended in too much. So as that artist I overrode history. I wanted a burgundy color, but it ended up looking a bit redder.
At first I thought that was a very short train. But apparently the cab is in the center, its called a camel back. The train continues behind it. This design allowed the driver to get away from the fire box, and get a better view, of the chunks of metal that may fly off in an accident... Its why we don't see them today.
This station in the background still exists today, it sat vacant for 30 years, then they fixed it, and painted it blue. The post cards shown it as green however.
