Original Title: Atlantic Ave, Subway Entrance
Location: 579 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, New York
This is the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), subway station, it was originally built in 1907. On the left is the Heins and LaFarge subway kiosk built in 1908. The building was designed to have an artistic flair, built in the Flemish Revival Style. It served as the underground access point for the trains below.
Elevated trains were very popular a 100 years ago. It allowed people to get off the busy streets and go right to your destination. However they were replaced with a better subway system, and many of these tracks were taken apart. This one was taken apart in 1941.
Today, on this very spot, you can still see this very building. However its no longer a building, its being used as a portal for light for the current subway. They say that if you walk in from the current entrance, and move back about 30 ft or so, look up, and you'll see the inside of this little building.
