Original Title: Boston & Maine RR Depot
Location: Salem, Ma, Riley Plaza, Washington & Norman St.
This is the Riley plaza Station in Salem, Ma. A rather ugly station, that managed to survive for about a hundred years. This building was designed in 1847, and at that time they didn't know what a train station should look like. The architect that designed this just happened to come back from a trip from England, and ended up designing this structure.
Made of Massachusetts Granite, it was designed to look like a majestic castle compete with towers. However it was cold, full of pigeons, drafty, filthy, and basically terrible. They removed it in 1954, as this building was right in the way of a major road, and the train blocking that major road was a problem.
I would imagine that back in the day, there must have been at least a few accidents before they installed that sign.
