Description
Colorized photo from 1889
Original title: C&NW Railway Station
Location: 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza #470, Chicago IL
These images were taken seconds apart from the same spot, I think they were going to make two postcards from it. To me they looked like they should stitch, and they did, though it took a few tries. It became a panorama, and I gained the back half the the lot, which I think adds to it greatly.
The date range given was 1880-89. I found a map from 1883, and it showed a building where that pile of rubble stands, so this could be 1884. Another image from around that time, showed that the building used to have a matching cone shaped roof, this one doesn't have that, its flat there. So I placed it at the longest date it could be instead. This building was torn down in 1911, replacing it with Merchandise Mart, a type of department store, which is still there today.
There was a lot of smoke in the background, I assume there are factories there or something. I kept it in there, It gives you a sense of being there, the smoke from the trains, the dust from that building, the smog in the air, the manure glued to your feet, it really was a romantic age.
