Original Title:Workmen constructing the Statue of Liberty in Bartholdi's Parisian warehouse workshop; first model; left hand; and quarter-size head-; Winter 1882?
Location: Somewhere on Rue Vavin, Paris France
Take a look at these faces. These are the artisans who made the Statue of Liberty. Relying on the light from the sun, these rooms don't seem to have electricity yet. Using full scale molds, each person shapes on one section.
In the back of the room sits a scaled model of Lady Liberty. This model is made from wood and plaster and is perfectly in scale. From that model, they make a new version 4 times the size. They shape it until perfect. Then they make forms from that only they are 4 times the size again. And that is what they are working on right now.
The metal shaping forms are simply wood rafter like structures on which copper is pounded in place. Copper was chosen for its durability, each section is about the thickness of two US pennies. And each section was hung on it's own skeleton inside the statue. The center structure was designed by Eiffel, who later on made the Eiffel tower using the same design.
