Its time of year again. Time to put on your best clothes and get the family portrait made. As you can see he looks ever so happy to get his picture taken.
An interesting thing to note, commonly people take pictures indoors, and they make it look like it was outdoors. In this image, they are clearly outside, with a diffusion panel of some kind to give it an indoors look.
In many of these formal portraits, especially if they are poor, they dress themselves up to look richer. Pocket watches, jewelry and so on can be found in almost every image of this era. There is a book in her lap, I think it's there to show she's educated and is taking time out from her leisurely day to get this image. But in reality I think they are farmers, as their hands, from what I can see of them, are dirty, worn and weathered.
