The Spaniel is a type of gun dog, they were especially bred to flush game out of denser brush. By the 17th century, spaniels had been specialized into water and land breeds. The water breed was used to retrieve waterfowl shot down by arrows. The land spaniels, crept forward pointing at the game, allowing hunters to catch their prey.
While they were used in hunting, today, we have them as pets and friends. Quiet and furry, a very extroverted animal, needs to be around humans.
They are often in many different shades of browns, with a variety of patterns. They are quick, durable and with their long hair, they make a fine mop. They make great playmates for kids, and can be trained as companions for athletes. They are large enough to be sporty and yet small enough to be portable.
