We must all hail the queen. The queen is the master of her domain within the colony, she lays eggs that create both female and male bees. All the other bee's tend to all her wishes and desires, but if they see she is getting weak, they prepare a new brooding chamber to make a new queen.
You can tell which is the queen, she has the yellow dot. Traditionally this is done this way because a crown would fall off.
