Description
Colorized photo from 1941
Original title: Barber shop in the Black Belt, Chicago
Photographer: Edwin Rosskam
Location: 31st & South, Chicago, IL (maybe)
I found two versions of this image. One of them had more of the sidewalk, and the barber was looking right at us, the guy in the chair smiling. And there was this one, which had local life and the barber was doing his job (before he noticed a photographer staring at him). I liked the other one better but this one was more natural.
They described the black belt location as run down and dilapidated. And the paint did look distressed, so I went with a bad paint look. I was able to find the scale, but not those ad's. Seems no one thought to save a Mac black hair straightener barber sign from 1941 so I could see it... the nerve.
I don't know what the exact address is, but someone online said it was residential looking, I suppose it could have been mixed with houses? Or if it was from 47th St, because there were a string of photos from that location. The name of the place started with an R, and it had some numbers scratched into the door, but I couldn't figure out what it was for.
