Description
Hand colored photo from 1939, Nov
Original title: Barber shop on [Hillsboro] street. Oxford, Granville County, NC
Photographer: Marion Post Wolcott
Location: 146 Hillsboro St, Oxford, NC
The Granville Barbershop, located on Hillsboro Street in Oxford, North Carolina, has been a cornerstone of the community for decades. Historical photographs from 1939 show the building as a barbershop, highlighting its long-standing role in the town.
Before its current use, the building served as a movie theater for the African American community during the era of segregation, offering a space for entertainment and connection. Its transition to a barbershop reflects the resilience and adaptability of local businesses in Oxford.
Today, the Granville Barber Shop continues to operate in the same building, preserving its historical charm while remaining a vital part of the town's cultural fabric. Its legacy as both a social hub and a symbol of community endurance speaks to the rich history of Oxford and its residents.
Color notes:
There was just enough detail to make out the inside pretty clearly. The colors of the clock is accurate, I actually found that clock. Today this location does have a barbershop, but it was rebuilt, they have a better sidewalk, that house on the left is gone. I don't know when they fixed it up, but based on how stitched together that window frame is, probably shortly after this picture was taken.
