Description
Hand colored photo from 1900
Original title: Photograph of two barbers in their shop
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Essex County, Ontario, Canada
In Essex County, Ontario, a Black-owned barbershop stands out with its classic charm, featuring an array of vintage gum advertisements that give the space a nostalgic touch. The shop is furnished with comfortable, stylish chairs that invite customers to sit back and relax while enjoying the services. Mirrors of various shapes and sizes line the walls, creating a bright and dynamic atmosphere that adds to the lively conversation and camaraderie inside. It's more than just a place for haircuts, it's a local gathering spot where history and community spirit are reflected in every corner.
Color notes
There are some odd hidden details in this: If you look carefully in the mirror, you'll see a selfie by the photographer. He could have walked one step to the side, but he knew what he was doing. There is oddly a box of corn flakes under the table. And all the ad's are gum related, I wonder if he gave gum out after the haircut like the barber's I went to did.
I couldn't find the ad's however, I found each Chiclets and Adam's Tutti-Frutti gum, as separate ads, but couldn't find those specific ones.
I have to note I hate mirrors, it's such a pain to look for the matching reflection. The image itself had a lot of black diagonal lines across most shadow points, which I had to carefully blend in.
