Colorized photo from 1909
Original Title: Boardwalk from Steeplechase Pier
Photographer: Detroit Publishing
Location: 1000 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, NJ
We are seeing what it looked like from around 1909. The location exists today, but naturally it looks totally different.
The building on the right is the Steel Pier itself, it was built on June 18th 1898. The structure underneath used iron beams and concrete, measured 2298ft long. It served as a venue for concerts, musicals, exhibits and so on. This pier has seen fires and storms, parts were washed out into the ocean over the years. And its rebuilt year after year, this particular pier exists, along with the boardwalk.
On the other hand, Steeplechase pier (where we are looking from), is gone today, it caught fire in 1986 and they razed it. Its just ocean now.
The area where those buildings are on the left, is where the failed Taj Mahal casino is, presently a Hard Rock Hotel. But the stores are very similar to what we see today.
