Original Title: The junction of Steep Street and Trenchard Street
Photographer: John Hill Morgan
Location: Trenchard St & Steep St. (Olston St ), Bristol, England
I love locations like this. It has that old world charm, because its from the old world. Lined with cobblestone, what I assume is excrement tossed onto the street, as I believe that's where they tossed it in those days. Can you imagine how slick that must have been? Imagine sliding down what you thought was mud, but wasn't mud, and you slide down to the bottom, on your bottom? That must have happened at least a few times. Winter or ice must have been really been tragic.
I like how the houses just look randomly stacked on top of each other.
The bland colors seem to be the theme in England, even on modern houses everyone uses an earth tone of some kind. Which of course made this a lot easier to color. Broken brick, random stucco, and scum. There is a tea room in England that looks just like this, built in the 1500's, bulging but otherwise has the charm of this picture.
When I first saw it, I thought, this would make a nice evening picture. There is something sort of romantic about candle lights in windows when its dark out. But I didn't want it to be night, I still wanted to see the details.
This location still exists geographically, more or less. Only that Steep Street, was replaced with a more level one named Colston St. And that quaint, crumbling building, replaced with a new old looking building.
