In 1916, a humble hot dog stand opened on Coney Island, marking the beginning of an iconic New York institution. Located on the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues, this small shop sold frankfurters at just five cents - a price deliberately set lower than its competitors to attract customers. The founder, a Polish immigrant, used a special recipe learned from his wife, incorporating a unique blend of spices that would soon become a signature taste.
The stand's popularity grew rapidly, partly fueled by word of mouth and a loyal customer base that included beachgoers and local workers. Over the years, it became more than just a food stall; it became a landmark synonymous with summer fun, amusement parks, and the Coney Island experience.
In the decades that followed, it expanded its reach, becoming a symbol of Americana. Its annual July 4th hot dog eating contest - started in the early 1970s - became a global event, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.
