Colorized photo from 1900 Sept 1
Original title: Chicago river elevators
Photographer: Detroit publishing
Location: On the river around 14th st, across from Roosevelt Park
This grain elevator was built in 1880, designed for the C&W railroad. A grain elevator stores grain by taking the material from a train, which it then carries it to the top to be stored. A boat comes by, they open a hatch, and the grain falls in, from there I'm not sure how it gets out. They had to be careful about the dust however, it wasn't mentioned how they prevented the explosions that kills people every year, even today.
This image came with a postcard, the boat on the side was sort of a mustard yellow, The sign was almost all red, but in reality the background is a lot darker in this, so I made it black for contrast, it could have been bright red, but I don't think so.
The water in real life will vary from blue to brown, and back then I know it was used as a sewer, so I added reflections, but put an overcoat of brown on it.
From my understanding, 6 months from this date, they will change the flow of the river. And a fun fact, in 1906 in Chicago, they didn't allow large signs to be painted on buildings like this, it had to be smaller. This building and sign were made before that new rule. It's not known if the grain in that building made beer, oh and the Schlitz company started in 1849, ended in 1999.
