Description
Colorized photo from 1942
Original title: "Red" Sounders, drummer and his band at Club DeLisa
Photographer: Jack Delano
Location: 5521 S. State Street, Chicago, IL
The photographer got his name wrong, he wrote it down as Sounders, but its really Saunders. It's not a big mistake, and I'm happy the photographer got the band leader's name, but that name stuck. He will forever be remember with both names.
Originally I was going to make the drums a red orange color, as to match with the Red part in name, of which I couldn't figure out why he was called Red. But opted for blue, because whatever that color was, it was light, and I don't think it was red. Instead the rest of the room has the warm tones.
I don't know what color he was wearing. At first I thought it was white, but that shirt is white. So it was either pink, yellow or beige. And I couldn't see him in pink.
The piano has these water marks on the side. I wonder if there was a leak above them. I cloned that stuff out. The lighting was a mix of a spotlight and a flash. Looking at the guys dancing, one guy looking at the stage, his eyes look normal, the other looking at the room, his eyes are very dilated.
