Description
Colorized photo from 1910
Original title: Madison Ave & Brevoort hotel
Photographer: Detroit Publishing
Location: 120 W Madison St between Clark & LaSalle, Chicago, IL
This is Madison Ave from around 1910. On the left is the Brevoort hotel, and its to my understanding, it moved across the street and up the block the following year. Next door to that is the LaSalle opera house, hard to know if that's the reason they moved in the first place.
On the left, are two Renault's, they were used as Taxi's. Back then they were either a green color or red. Yellow came out later when the Yellowcab services was created in Chicago around when this picture was taken. Back then anyone with a car became a cab, they made them yellow so you knew it was a taxi, and later on the color caught on.
I couldn't tell what the road was made of, it looks like cement, but has impressions like dirt, so I made it look like both. The original range for this image was 1900-1915. Based on the amount of cars, I'm guessing its later. But looking up the license plates I could find 1915, but nothing more before that. In those days there were no standard plates. They were made of leather and someone painted the numbers on. Or they were attached to a metal plate with little tabs, you did it yourself. Nothing was standard, and if you look on the right, you'll see this really long version.
