The more I think about it, the more I think the reason that brown suits were popular in the past was to help hide the dirt from the roads. You can see a watering truck wetting down the dry roads back in the distance on the left. It's probably dry overall as the grass has sprinklers too.
You can see in this picture how the old plaster was falling off the structure, it's been only 14 years but it already looks pretty bad. It got much worse over the years though. I wasn't quite sure what colors the roof was so I matched it up with postcards and added some corrosion.
This location and most of this view still exists today. Though I think there is an underground garage, and more cars on the street, no benches.
This is Jackson Park, a remnant of the Chicago World's fair of 1893, on the right is the Museum of Science and Industry, though at the time of the fair it was known as the Palace of Fine Arts. The building was used from 1893-1894, whereas all the other buildings looked fancy at the time, they were built from weak materials, and all fell apart over the years (they were designed to only last around 6 months).
However this building was built from brick so it held up over the years. But it sat empty and the plaster on the outside fell off and the building looked worse and worse until 1921, where they demolished sections of it keeping only the central parts. In 1933-34, they remodeled it for the Century of Progress world's fair. After that it became the Historic Landmark known as the Museum of Science and Industry.
