If you should ever visit Chicago, go to Lincoln Park, they have a very old free zoo there. It began in 1868, with a gift of two swans from Central Park in NY. From there they built the zoo out from two small animals to many animals.
As the zoo grew in size, a concession stand was built in the center of it. A few guys made a stand to sell fruit and veggies to hungry crowds. It became popular enough that a concession stand was opened there. In 1899, in the heart of the zoo, the Red Roof Cafe was opened. It later changed its name to the Landmark Cafe, which its not only still called now, but still in use as the oldest zoo concession stand still in use.
The building behind this one, was called a lantern copula. Over a hundred years ago, the animal cages only had one way to get the animal out. If there was an emergency, it became tricky to get the animal out, and really tricky to break up a fight between animals. In the winter they would need to move the animals from the summer quarters to the winter version (indoors). They did this using a cage with wheels, that they then backed into their summer cage and then some how pushed the animal out and into the travel cage. Something they did not like to do.
So they built that animal house, it served as a way to walk the animals safely from one spot to another, and I think served as a place for smaller animals to be seen. It also allowed for more ventilation and light to come in.
Now that thing in the front is called a bubbling cup. It was used to serve free water in a sanitized way. People would drink it from the fountain, where the water would just prevent germs from collecting. In the past people would have a drinking glass that they would all share from. Just rinsing it out a little bit before the next had a turn. Though I do see a girl holding a glass, I can only assume she brought it from home so she could have the unique experience of drinking water in a park. As you can see it was a very popular and enjoyable activity, yay water.
