The year is confusing, they gave a range of 1900-1910. The Marshall fields building, has clock on two sides of this building. Yet there is no clock. They said it was installed in 1897, yet its not in this image. I have another view of this block from 1911, that does have the clocks, so this image may be earlier than 1900. I do know there are no cars.
I did learn an interesting fact though, if you look at the carriages, you'll notice that the carts are on the grooves of the street cars. That's because the people that designed the trains, and the street car rails originally made the horse carts, which is around 56 inches I believe. That measurement came from common carts they used in roman days, and that's where the carts they used, came from (blueprint wise). So the tracks and wheels are actually all a standard size.
In this scene the street cars are electric, but you can see one that is or was a cable car. The red building on the left is a Masonic Temple, and that one closest to us, is the same site the Chicago theater is on.
This scene is full of detail. Like there is a horse wearing a hat, I've seen horses wearing hats, but its always fun to find another. I never have seen a bird only store, there is even a cockatoo. Also a giant teapot (I love signs in shapes of things they deal with). I also want to try a molasses candy.
This shot was probably taken from the El Track.
