Description
Colorized photo from 1907
Original Title: Arriving from the suburbs
Location: Chicago, Il, Van Buren St.
Built in 1896, this was the original location of the Van Buren Street Station, now known as the Metra. This was one of many stops along the route, it pretty much looks the same now, only today the trains are electric.
In the background, you can see the Chicago Art Institute, it was built in 1893 for the Columbian Exposition, the Art institute itself was 1879, and as you can see its quite small, today its spread out across the tracks.
That tall tower is the Montgomery Ward tower, in those days, it was the tallest building in the area. Today that building doesn't have its tower. Out in the distance, all you see are factories, today that entire area is a huge skyscraper city.
