Colorized image from 1906
Original title: Mount Adams Incline
Photographer: Detroit Publishing
Location: 64 Lock street (no longer there), Aligns with 367 Kilgour St, Cincinnati, OH
This is the Mount Adams incline, built in 1872, and demolished in 1948, it was used for over 75 years! The incline saved a lot of time, as it would often take 45 minutes or more to go up the hilly streets, this only took a minute.
What attracted me to this image was the railroad scenery like atmosphere. I loved that I could see each row of houses. We are seeing front and backs of homes, as one of the blocks in the back can only have one row of houses due to that steep hill above.
What I found odd was the lack of people in here. There are only a few, there is one hiding under the car, a few in the trolley, a guy way back on the left installing shutters, and a lady on the right in a yellow dress. Oh and the carriage at the bottom, and one guy hiding on the lower left. But nothing else.
I believe this is Spring. They are airing out houses, and the trees seem to have buds or sparse leaves. So I added flowers to the branches to make it different. But you can really only see it up close.
I'm not sure what those door cut outs are in the walls. I assume its some kind of root cellar. You can still find some of those walls with doors if you look at the streets. In fact the gap next to that brown house (its still brown today), is the line where this thing ran. And the original footings are still there, but in a really terrible state.
As I'm making this I was wondering what they did when their outhouse filled up? The land is small and hard to dig, and eventually the entire yard would be full, I would imagine it could become a large stinky sinkhole. So I wonder how they managed that? It's probably a good thing toilets were invented to help with that.
