Description
Colorized photo from 1908
Original title: The Burnet House
Photographer: Detroit Publishing
Location: Third and Vine St, Cincinnati, OH
This was the Burnet Hotel, it was built in 1850 and razed in 1926. The Civil War was planned inside by guests Grant and Sherman. Even old Abe Lincoln stopped by twice.
There were two postcards that I could find. Both showing the hotel as a sort of mint green with beige parts. And both cards didn't show all those overhead wires. Very distracting wires. Now when I shoot photos myself, unless its a city shot, I remove the wires. And it seems they had the same idea. Probably because that pole and that wooden thing up there is super distracting. It takes away from the building. And I'm guessing the hotel wanted to sell these postcards.
If you look carefully in the original, you'll see they removed the sky and wires, and tried to white out the lines over the brick. Originally I was going to keep the wires but kept noticing areas that were like scratched out. And it was actually too much trouble to add new wires, because it was distracting.
So like the postcard, I removed the wires, which was even more of a pain, but I do think it looks better that way. The rest of the colors actually matched the postcard for the most part. I'm not sure what that castle like building is on the right.
