Eden park in Cincinnati has many different features, this gazebo is one of them. It was built in 1904 to replace a spring house that was already there. It was brightly painted, has a tile roof and a ball finial, its designed with Moorish architecture. It's also currently still standing, making it the longest enduring structure in the Cincinnati park system.
Behind the gazebo is a body of water, while it looks like a pond, in reality is a part of the water supply for Walnut Hills. As such, a pump was placed in the middle of the gazebo so people can get a fresh drink. In the background is the Art Museum, a building that is still in use today.
This Gazebo was made famous in 1927, from the famed Remus Incident. A Cincinnati lawyer and bootlegger, George Remus went to jail. While locked up, he told an inmate that his wife Imogene controlled all of his money. But as it turned out that inmate was really an undercover prohibition agent, hoping to get dirt on booze related information.
The undercover agent, named Franklin Dodge, resigned his position and started a relationship with that lawyer's wife, Imogene Remus. Together, they took all of George Remus's money, tried to have him deported and when that didn't work, hired a hit man to take him out for $15,000 ($225,000 today).
Then Imogene decided to divorce him, which was the last straw for George, on his way to the divorce proceedings, Remus had his driver follow his wife's car, and run it off the road. There right in front of this very gazebo, he shot her, and she died, legend has it, that on certain nights, the ghost of Imogene can be seen looking off the gazebo and staring at Mirror Lake.
But of course that makes little sense since at that time, this body of water was there, in 1965, they drained this reservoir and made a new one underneath the lake. So I guess she is just staring at something else.
