Location: Times Star Office, Corner of Sixth and Walnut streets
The Times Star newspaper in Cincinnati, OH, had a late day sports only addition. I guess it was another way to buy yet another newspaper. These kids are called newsies, paper boys, newsboys, all ready to get the money from the people being let out of work. I would imagine it would be like running into a flock of very dirty seagulls all grabbing at your wallet.
Note that half these kids aren't wearing shoes, with feet dirty enough that it looks like they are. People were poor back then, many of these kids may have been making money for their parents. But shoes are expensive, and kids outgrow things fast, so many went barefoot everywhere. And if you can imagine cobblestone, manure, broken boards and nails in the street, it must have been kind of terrible. Note the makeshift bandage that kid on the left made. There are also quite a few adults mixed into the crowd.
They are standing in front of the original Times Star Office, which was later replaced by an over the top Art Deco style building in the 1930s. Note the chutes, I'm certain they slid the papers off of those for the kids or carriages.
