What fun it was to be a kid in the 1940's. You could build yourself a small car using a wooden crate, some scrap wood and salvaged wheels. Then you could "safely" roll down a dirt road, not worrying too much about pavement removing your face parts if you crashed.
Brakes would also work a lot better on a dirt road, especially if you were barefoot. In those days people expected kids to do dangerous stuff like fly by in a homemade car on a busy street with real cars on it. They aren't "safe" like today's kids, which can only go outside if their schedule allows it.
