At one point Kansas City, had some of the most interesting looking architecture. Life was always interesting, lots of signs to look at, colorful awnings, friendly horses, and all those pretty dresses.
We are standing on Main Street, North from 12th, and this is what it was like in the 1900's. While there were cars in the area, there were none here right now, and there didn't look like there were places to park anyway.
At one time, streetcars ran down the center of it. This street had many clothing store, and many doctor and pharmacies. On the right, we have Petticoat Lane, named that way for all the dresses they sold there. If you look at the back, on the left, that tower, is the Kansas City Times newspaper building, you can still see a faint T on the roof. That end area was known as the "Junction", due to the streets converging on that spot. Today it's still called that.
Today, it looks very different. The buildings were replaced with either parking garages, or taller buildings. A few old buildings exist, but I think they were from the 1920's. The tracks in the center were removed for a while, then replaced and put on the outer roads, and they still run a streetcar there. It was a real wonder back then, with large signs shaped like things, today, its a street that you probably didn't notice as you went through it.
