How time has changed this street. At one point it was almost magical, all these interesting buildings, you almost expect to see a wizard walking around. Many of these buildings were built in the 1870's.
The Vaughan's Diamond building (the one with the Owl Cigars sign), was built in 1870. It was at the intersection of 9th and Main and Delaware. It was right in the middle, designed to fit a weird triangular piece of land. It was designed in the French-style (Second empire), but it was demolished in 1915.
That tall building in the background, was the Kansas City Times newspaper building, you can still see a faint T on the roof. The paper was started in 1867, but lasted till 1990. The building was replaced in 1920 by the Kay Hotel.
They seemed to love their detailed signs, they placed them in large lantern structures, you can see the Palace clothing sign on the right as an example. Some are even made of stained glass, though not on this street. They do have a stained glass mortar and pestle on the left. Check out the spiral staircase fire escape in the way back. Imagine trying to go down that in an emergency, especially while wearing a long dress.
But today, this location is quite frankly dull. It's almost confusing compared to this image, especially to time travelers.
