Original title:Peanut stand next to the Lutz butcher shop finds it hard to get peanuts since the war started. Peanut oil is needed in industry
Photographer: Marjory Collins
Location: 54 E Main St, Lititz, PA
The war hurt different people in different and unexpected ways. Like poor Bill, who simply wanted to sell peanuts, but couldn't because they needed the nuts for the war. More specifically peanut oil, it had many uses, it was very versatile stuff, it resisted spoiling so it made a good substitute in food preparation, gave the soldiers a bit more energy, they used it in the military rations. It was used in paints, lubrication, hydraulic fluid, they even used it to manufacture explosives.
I think this is the first time I've ever seen a person smile in a picture, usually they are serious and stone faced. And considering he has coins in his hand, and looked like he was there to buy peanuts, one could only conclude he just got a new bike and also gets to be in a random photo.
The bike by the way is a 1936 Schwinn Excelsior C Model, though when I looked it up, it had a different headlight fender thing, so this may have been modified. The candy apple green however was an option, I could have also used red, but its not about the bike, its about the location and there is already a lot of red in this.
Today this location existed, in fact 90% of it is intact, the pillar and tile are gone. But the concrete pad, a piece of the window header toward the ground are still there, even that little crack in the sidewalk on the pad behind the wheel, is there, but there are a lot more cracks now. The gutter on the side looks almost identical. The building here is painted, the current one is not. But they did such a good job cleaning it I couldn't find one spec of paint to go by, so I painted this the color of the building.
There is a chunk of wood with numbers on it, I assume that when it was open he had bags of different sizes by each price. I'm not clear how he dispensed these things, I assume there was an opening in that super narrow alley.
