Description
Hand colored photo from 1908, Sept 9
Original title: Returning summer crowd outside Grand Central
Photographer: Bain News
Location: 63 East 42nd Street, New York, NY
Bain news worked for the New York times, so this image was a part of a story back on this day. But I don't know what that story was about other than people going home on the subway. I suppose the fact that the subway has only been in use for 4 years, it could be a story about that.
It's fun to see how orderly everything is here. The roads are wet from something, but so are the sidewalks. I'm thinking that maybe its one of those wet down trucks, but there are horses there in the way. So maybe it was an ice wagon dripping a path, and going into each store, that should leave a trail I would think.
We are on the left side of the building, you can see distant train cars where there is currently a street. Just beyond the smog, are apartments, that I assume at some point were demolished. There is a pharmacy across the street, and some crazy lady in a red dress, shadow boxing? Air guitar? No bow archery practice? We will never know.
The original image had some major exposure issues, heavy in the dark and the light, while the building was in shadow. I guess they exposed for shadow to see some of the people. The colors of the building are confusing, as I made a 1900 version and it was all white. But this clearly has dark points at least on this one side. So I made it dark. Though in one postcard, it was tan and brick, which it think was very off unless they painted it all.
Currently none of this area exists, and while there is one version of Grand Central still there, it's not this one.
