Description
Colorized photo from 1910
Original Title: Railroad on 11th Ave., N. Y. City
Photographer: Bain Publishing
Location: 277 10th Ave, NY
The original picture was titled wrong, as this is 10th ave, there is a building down the street that is still there today. It was built in 1910 (this picture had no original date). And because it was a news article, and not a postcard, there were no colors assigned to it, and a lot of these buildings are gone now.
I colored the train like a local streetcar because it was designed to look like a streetcar so it wouldn't scare the horses. But I wasn't sure if it had stripes or was all one color. There wasn't enough info.
I thought it was interesting that the barber has a wagon out front with what I think is a stylized razor blade on it. I wonder if he used it for advertising or made house calls? There is also a street sweeper, and a guy on crutches on the far right. On the right hand track there is a horse drawn streetcar still in use.
Also there is a pile of barrels in front of the hardware store. They appeared to have stripes on it. This is the second hardware store that had a stack of barrels in front of it. There is even a sign that has that same symbol. Yet I couldn't find a darn thing about it. It's like how pharmacies put show globes in their window. Based on that, I colored the barrels in different colors, but I may be wrong in how those looked. Also I'm 80% those sidewalks are slate, and if you look carefully you'll see sidewalk art. I'm pretty sure this was taken late in the day, and based on the light, it was probably very sunny on that street.
