If it weren't for the New York Detectives on Facebook, I wouldn't have had any idea where this was.
This was a fund raiser by the French Benevolent Society. It was used to raise money for a hospital by celebrating Bastille day as in those days this area was mostly french.
The park was Sulzer's Harlem River Park, which in its day had a casino, a carousel, and clearly a stage and food court. As far as I can tell this wasn't set up for this one event, it was already here. Because of that I painted it up so it was fancier. I used period colors for everything but bumped up the fancy scale.
At first I didn't know if that flag on the far right was the French flag, as they too have a red white and blue flag. I decided that must be the tent and made it tent colors.
I would love to know what was in those boxes, quite a few people had a cake sized box with them.
