Ernest Roeber was a wrestler, known as the Adonis of the Bowery. He was a champion of the Greco-Roman wresting from 1892-1902. He fought here and abroad, and is well known to wrestling fans of his day. He created this saloon a year before his retirement. It closed in 1920 when prohibition started.
This was taken on a rainy day, and I believe that the shadow is a rain hood, it totally blocks out the sky, which I had to rebuild a bit.
They gave an estimated year, but the magazines suggest 1908 in April. From my understanding the sign was a left over from the George Ehret's factory, which may be the reason why it looks more worn than the rest of the place. I think the building opened in 1901 or so, but it looks pretty bear up anyway, with loss of gold on the letters. Maybe the rain was very acid back then.
The building had a weird siding that looks like it had brick painted on the surface.
I couldn't find this particular address, and they did say they had two bars, this might be the other bar. But the paper that took this mentioned this address, so we can assume this is right. I'm not quite sure why they took this photo though, its a bad day, and I don't think there anything special going on at the time.
I like the guy peeking out in the middle, and what I thought was his reflection is another person behind the glass.
