Description
Colorized photo from 1936 June
Original title: Fulton street fish market
Photographer: Berenice Abbott
Location: Fulton Street
This is the Fulton Street Market during its hay day. Stevedores bustling about loading fish and other goods into trucks. Because there were a lot of people here, food stalls were set up, and you could find people selling fruit, snacks and in this case hot dogs.
The Fulton market we see here was built in 1883, but it was said it was removed in 1948 or so. It was later replaced by a building that vaguely looks like the old building, but it really doesn't. Directly above us is where they put the FDR Drive. This view is mostly blocked by that overhead street, though oddly the shadows are the same.
Some of the buildings in the skyline are still there though, a few of them built a few years ago. You can see: Bank of Manhattan trust building, City Bank Farmers trust building, and the Cities Service building.
