Description
Colorized photo from 1903, January
Original Title: A characteristic sidewalk newsstand
Location: 6th Ave. on the corner of 23rd St. New York, NY
I have to say, that this was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Magazines were very colorful back then, and this table had a lot of them. What makes this kind of image take a long time is that you have to do research on every single magazine you see in there, along with all the ad's.
In the case of the magazines, I found about half of them. Most editions were for later years. This stand has a mix of December and January, 1902 and 1903, which made it harder. If these were from 1920 and up, I think it would have been easier. Plus many of these are local magazines. It was a lot guess work for many of them.
The ad's had to be reassembled from packaging and guess work.
The colors of the stairs, are also a guess. I know much of it is a green color, and I did see an old roof that was red, plus I needed the contrast there. The rest I left as a cream color, but really rusted looking.
This location and building still exists for the most part. Only the upstairs were replaced by stairs going down, and there still is a newspaper stand there.
