Description
Colorized photo from 1865
Original Title: Richmond, Va. View on James River and Kanawha Canal near the Haxall Flour Mills; ruins of the Gallego Mills beyond
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Shortly after the war, this is what Ricmond, Virginia looks like. Buildings destroyed all around, yet this factory some how survived it all.
This mill is the Haxall Flour Company. They made a special kind of flower that didn't lose its sweetness even over long voyages. It was the largest factory in the area and maybe even the world (in its day). Even larger than tobacco and other companies.
This company was open till about 1894 or so, then it seemed to have moved to another location near this, when it was enlarged and converted to an electricity based operation (and not water powered like before). It stayed open from around 1900 to 1964.

Well done, Mike. It looks as if it were something that Michael Kinkade might have painted
