I do expect images that are over a 150 years old to be dirty but this was really filthy. I was able to repair a portion of the damage on the sides, rebuilt the blanket, hat, and tent. But so much dirt.
I cropped around anyway to keep them better centered. Images from this era, its hard to tell what colors they are wearing, as the shades of gray look different compared today's method of making black and white images. Shades that are light may actually be dark and vice versa. So the light colored shirts may actually be red, which would look dark by today's standards. And dark colors may actually be yellow. But since I have no idea what color shirts they would have worn, I just went with whatever looked best and should be period.
The image is of General Fitz-John Porter and his staff. I'm not sure which one he is, he's either the beard on the left or the right. I found other images of him, but everyone looks the same. On the lower right with the dog is General Custer, only he's not a general yet, he's a lieutenant. That's his dog, he owned between 40-80 dogs, he loved dogs, always had a dog with him. A year after this was shot, he became a Brigadier general.
