Editing wise, this took quite a bit of time, There are so many faces that needed coloring. But that was one of the reasons I liked it. This is a study hall for a brain surgeon, the first brain surgeon, the guy on the right with beard.
Naturally this image is more about the people in the background then the patient that you can't even see. Each one with their own interest. Some actually want to see the operation. A few look almost sleep or are certainly very casual. Others are giving the camera a glare. Others look bored out of their minds.
In those days they didn't know from germs, so sitting in the room next to the patient, right in the splash zone, was totally normal. Doctors had no gloves, no masks, the outfits only kept their suits clean. Note that right in the middle of the operation the head doctor actually steps back so the people behind him can get into the frame.
Imagine waking up to see that many eyes looking at your exposed guts?
