In the early 1900s, gynecology was a developing field, heavily reliant on manual procedures, surgery, and rudimentary diagnostic tools. Gynecologists primarily treated conditions like uterine prolapse, infections, and infertility through invasive procedures such as hysterectomies or oophorectomies. Pelvic examinations with speculums were standard, but without modern imaging technology, diagnosing internal issues was more challenging.
A variety of instruments were used, which included questionable electrical devices that were used to treat conditions like "hysteria" or menstrual problems. It was believed that mild electrical currents could "reset" or stimulate the reproductive organs. These devices were part of the early attempts at using electrotherapy, based on limited understanding of how electricity interacted with the body.
The glass containers with tubes were likely used for early forms of suction or drainage, common in medical procedures to remove fluid buildup or infections. They might have been attached to pumps or vacuum devices to aid in treating reproductive organ infections or assisting with post-surgical care. Such devices, although primitive by today's standards, were early efforts at using technology to address gynecological problems.
Coloring notes: In the past they made really decorative sinks and urns, so that was a bit of fun. You'll notice there is no drain installed, I can only assume this is a very old office and plumbing wasn't installed yet. I'm not quite sure what those cans are on the top shelf, but they sure put it in a hard to get at area. That all metal table looks really cold.
