Before that, bucket brigades were the main method of fire suppression. The development of pressurized fire pumps in the late 17th and early 18th centuries led to the invention of basic nozzles, which allowed firefighters to direct water more efficiently.
By the 19th century, advancements in firefighting technology saw the introduction of brass and copper nozzles with adjustable spray patterns. The smooth-bore nozzle, still used today, was an early design that provided a solid stream of water. In the early 20th century, fog nozzles were introduced, allowing for a finer mist to absorb heat more effectively. Modern fire nozzles now offer variable flow rates, fog patterns, and even foam injection for tackling different types of fires.
